Diabetes is a chronic disease that requires a person with diabetes to make a multitude of daily self-management decisions and to perform complex care activities. The National Standards for DSME are designed to define quality diabetes self-management education and to assist diabetes educators in a variety of settings to provide evidence-based education. Diabetes education programs are developed to serve the diabetes community by offering quality education that meets a set of standards and is then eligible for third-party insurance reimbursement.
